Ignition Interlock Devices
If you’ve been convicted of DUI, you may be required to install an ignition interlock device in your vehicle. Doing this costs both a monthly rental fee as well as a one-time installation charge, both of which you will pay.
An ignition interlock device is used to prevent known DUI offenders from driving while intoxicated. In order to accomplish this, the driver must breathe into an alcohol sensor that is located on his or her vehicle’s dashboard. This alcohol sensor will then determine the driver’s blood alcohol content, or BAC.
If the device determines that the driver’s BAC is elevated, he or she will be unable to start the automobile. And even if the driver’s BAC is normal, he or she will have to continually breathe into the device while driving. If the driver’s BAC goes above the device’s set limit (usually .02% or .04%), the vehicle’s lights will start flashing or the horn will sound until the vehicle is stopped. The result of each breath analysis is then recorded via log files. Authorized individuals can then download or print all activity and use the information to determine whether or not the individual is following the guidelines of his or her conviction.
In addition to paying a monthly rental and installation fee, most ignition interlock devices also require regular maintenance. At this time, a trained technician will calibrate the alcohol sensor and analyze the driver’s activity. If the log files show any breath test failures, the individual’s driving privileges may be further restricted.
It is important to know, however, that the alcohol sensors found in your ignition interlock device are not nearly as accurate as the machines used by police officers. If the device is not calibrated regularly or correctly, it may provide false readings.
If you’ve been required to have an ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle, or if you believe your current device has given false readings, you need to speak with an experienced DUI attorney. With the proper help, you may not have to have an ignition interlock device installed. In some cases, your charges may be dropped completely.
