DUI Schools
If you’ve been convicted of DUI, you may be tempted to immediately sign up for an alcohol education program, or as it’s commonly called, DUI school. Although some states may reduce your charges upon successful completion of the course, this is not always true. In fact, it may only be a small portion of your sentence. Even if this is your first DUI, you may still lose your license and/or serve time in jail. Before you decide to attend DUI school, make sure you know the facts.
First, DUI school is not free. In fact, depending upon the state, the program can cost several thousand dollars or more. And this doesn’t include your court fees! Plus, despite DUI classes, you may still lose your license. The cost to have your license reinstated is also quite hefty. With all these factors, the cost of DUI school may be more than it is worth.
Yet another factor to consider is the time required to complete the alcohol education program. Some classes last only a few days, while others may take up several weekends. Although some states may offer online courses, most programs will require you to attend classes in-person. Contrary to what you may think, there is more to the program than just taking notes. Indeed, your instructor has the ultimate say as to whether or not you successfully complete the class. If he or she feels the class has had no impact on you, you may not receive a certificate of completion, which means the DUI class will have no effect on your sentencing. Additionally, you may be required to take a “field trip” to a hospital or even a morgue in order to see the effects of DUI. For most people, this experience is far from pleasant.
If this is not your first DUI conviction, you may not get off so easily. If you are a repeat offender, you can expect to have your driver’s license suspended. And even after your license is reinstated - which could take years in some areas - the courts often require repeat offenders to purchase additional insurance. As you can imagine, this extra insurance coverage is also quite expensive.
